چکیده

Introduction: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder with a prevalence of about 5-10% of the general population. Its clinical symptom is characterized by uncontrollable, unbearable urges to move the legs, causing chronic sleep deprivation. The iron deficiency has been considered an important contributing factor for RLS [1]. In vivo iron evaluation for RLS has largely utilized T2 (=1/R2). However, other confounding factors such as water contents and diffusion may result in changes in tissue T2. Tissue iron content is known to be more specifically associated with tissue R2(=1/T2). The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) to determine the sensitivity of R2 mapping method for the detection of the iron deficiency in RLS, and 2) to determine abnormal R2 distribution in the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway.

Introduction: Restless legs syndrome is a neurological disorder hemodialysis patients seem to suffer more from this syndrome. Although the pathophysiology of restless legs syndrome is still unknown, assessment of factors associated with this syndrome can help to develop medical knowledge in this field. The present study assessed the relationship between restless legs syndrome, serum iron, and s...

The Neurobiology and Treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome

BACKGROUND Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a relatively common neurological disorder affecting sleep and health-related quality of life. Neuroimaging studies, autopsy investigations and experimental studies using animal models have been conducted to investigate the potential causes of RLS, resulting in the generation of multiple pathophysiological hypotheses. METHODS This paper reviews the ne...

Restless legs syndrome and low brain iron levels in patients with haemochromatosis.

Regional brain iron levels of two patients with haemochromatosis and severe restless legs syndrome (RLS) were assessed using R2' magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences in both patients and in nine healthy controls. R2' relaxation rates in the patients were decreased in the substantia nigra, red nucleus, and pallidum when compared with the controls. These results indicate that local brain ir...
